NATIONAL HOLIDAYS
IN JAPAN



January 1 New Year's Day
Offices are usually closed around Dec. 27th to Jan. 5th. This is biggest holiday season in Japan.
Second Monday
of January
Coming-of Age Day
Japan's legal age is 20. Smoking and drinking are legal from age 20.
 February 11
 

National Foundation Day.  

 
March 21 Vernal Equinox Day  
April 29 Greenery Day
Late Emperor's birthday. This day was fixed as a holiday since this day is the beginning of "Golden Week." Some factories and offices close up to 10 days when weekends fall in right place.
May 3 Constitution Memorial Day  
May 4 People's Day The newest holiday.
May 5 Children's Day
Actually this is Boys' Day. Girls' Day is March 3rd and not a national holiday. Go figure.
July 21 Marine Day  
September 15 Respect-for-the-Aged Day  
September 23 Autumn Equinox Day

Sports Day  
November 1 Sushi Day
This is not a national holiday, but the most important day of the year for sushi lovers. You can get discount at sushi bars on this day. Let's promote this day world wide!

December 23 Emperor's Birthday  

Besides these national holidays, offices are closed around New Year's Day as mentioned above and around August 15, Bon (O-bon). During these holidays Tokyo seems less crowded since many people go back to their home town.
